Maculelê with Bando Matilha

We are thrilled to welcome Bando Matilha Capoeira to Glasgow for Maculelê with Bando Matilha, a three-day celebration of movement, rhythm, and Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage on 30 and 31 October. Bando Matilha is a multicultural artistic collective dedicated to Capoeira training and education. Founded in 2009 under the leadership of Contramestre Ta Ligado, the group has been active in public schools in Cidade Satélite do Gama, promoting accessibility, participation, and appreciation of popular and Afro-Brazilian culture.

The collective’s work is rooted in joy, playfulness, and creativity, offering free training sessions that strengthen traditional educational and cultural practices in local schools. Bando Matilha has adapted to challenging circumstances, including continuing cultural engagement during the pandemic through remote teaching, and has collaborated on major projects such as O Bê-á-bá do Berimbau as part of the Circuito Candango de Culturas Populares.

During the event, participants will have the opportunity to engage with Maculelê and Capoeira in a lively, communal environment. The programme also celebrates the tradition of roda exchanges, inspired by Mestre Russo de Caxias/RJ, highlighting Capoeira as a popular, free, and label-free form of cultural expression. This is a rare opportunity to connect with a collective whose work embodies the enduring spirit, knowledge, and communal ethos of Afro-Brazilian practices.

Stay tuned for updates on the venue and ticketing, and join us in celebrating the energy, creativity, and cultural richness of Bando Matilha.
