Mundo Girou

To build something solid, we often start by looking at the ground. In capoeira, standing on our hands—seeing the world de ponta-cabeça—is not just a physical movement. It is a method of observation. It teaches us how to find balance when the environment shifts, allowing us to read the room from a different angle and respond with clarity. Right now, the environment is shifting. Mestre Carlão is an Brazilian composer and capoeirista. Currently preparing his twelfth album, Mundo Girou. The title acknowledges that the world has spun.

The project is a deliberate response to the political climate in Brazil as we approach the October 2026 elections, a period defined by the return of forces that seek to unsettle our democratic foundation. Art has a function in this context. It records the moment, it offers a response, and it reminds people of their collective capacity to act. "Because art does not stay silent when the world demands a voice."

Action requires community, and independent music requires resources.

To fund the recording and release of Mundo Girou, We are holding a practical session in Glasgow. The SambaScots percussion workshop will take place on 7 August at the Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre from 6pm to 8pm. We will focus specifically on the pandeiro.

By participating, are not simply attending a class. Is entering an exchange, where will learn the mechanics of a percussive tradition, and in return, your contribution will directly fund the production of Mundo Girou, ensuring this music reaches the public when it is needed.

Listen to the history:
You can explore Mestre Carlão's full discography, eleven albums of rhythm as resistance, at www.carloalexandre.bandcamp.com. With your help, Mundo Girou will be the twelfth.

To further support the fundraising efforts for the Mundo Girou album, a special raffle will be held on the day of the workshop, offering the chance to win a Mundo Girou's shirt and a copy of Mestre Carlão’s book, In Search of Mandinga: Encounters Around the World. Motivated by a close friend after more than four decades as a capoeirista, Carlo Alexandre Teixeira brings his most profound memories to life in this collection of seven stories. Spanning his travels across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, the book offers a deeply personal look at the tough, rich, and abundant lives of the people who have influenced his work as an activist artist. It is a reflection on his lifelong pursuit of Mandinga—the magic and mastery hidden within the capoeira game. Every raffle entry will directly assist in bringing the new album to life.
