Rhythm & Resistance workshops
This series of workshops is for people of all levels of musical experience to learn together samba, jongo, ponto and capoeira songs. All these types of Brazilian music come from a radical history of resistance, which we will learn about whilst experimenting with the music. Through playing these rhythms, we can explore not only the foundations of carnival culture, but also ways to resist oppression and sadness.
The workshop is on a pay-what-you-can basis and you don't need to speak or understand Portuguese, nor know how to play any musical instruments. Instruments are provided, but feel free to bring your own with you.
These workshops run from 6pm to 8pm and the next one is on 18th August at Milk Cafe, Milk Glasgow 452 Victoria Road, Glasgow, G42 8YU.
"In an increasingly individualistic world, Carnival frightens because it confronts the decline of group life, revives bonds contrary to community dilution, strengthens memberships and sociabilities, and creates networks of protection in the cracks of disenchantment." Luiz Antonio Simas
If you'd like to know more, we have a WhatsApp group: Rhythm & Resistance, where we share more about this workshop.
