Uma Roda of Movements and Ancestral Echoes
O Ilê Malungo is an escola de capoeiragem, school of capoeira, anchored in the living lineage of Mestre Russo’s Cosmos Capoeira. Here in Glasgow, we are building a comunidade dedicated to the preservation and active practice of Afro-Brazilian culture. We are a living house of malungos in transit. It is the chão varrido, he swept-earth ground, where the berimbau dictates the law and the body invents its own fuga, escape. Here, the philosophy of capoeira rests in the jogo junto, in playing together. We honour mourning and ancestry, bridging the world of the living with those who came before us. As Mestre Russo teaches: “If the Roda did not represent the world, it would be square, not round.”
Para o corpo que chega, For the arriving body, the doors are wide open. Our focus is ginga as a tactical state of being, a structural practice of constant adaptation. Initial clumsiness is not a falha, failure,; it is the logical starting point. We view the beginner’s body as a field of potentiality where we learn to vadiar sem pressa, to play without rushing, rediscovering the body as a ferramenta de liberdade, tool of freedom, and expresion.
In this terreiro, sacred ground, under the Glasgow clouds, our safeguard comes from the elders. Grounded in the ancestralidade of Mestre Russo and Mestre Carlão, and in aliança alliance with many others, we understand that no one sustains the cantiga alone. Like a community that unites its ancestors and its living within the same roda, we continue travelling together.
Mediating the Crossroads
In the universe of capoeira and traditional Afro-Brazilian culture, the Coringa operates as the wildcard, the dynamic force that fluidly adapts to any situation to bridge gaps and facilitate movement. The primary role is to mediate the encruzilhada, the sacred crossroads where different worlds, temporalities, and people meet. Rather than imposing rigid, top-down instruction, Coringa guides practitioners through the steps of capoeira by translating the profound philosophies of his lineage into accessible, bodily expressions. He orchestrates a learning environment where the roda becomes a living microcosm of the world, fostering a space where everyone can learns to navigate the complexities of life through the dialogue of movement.
The Pedagogy of Rhythm and Ancestry
The learning dynamic established by Coringa transcends physical conditioning; it is an immersive initiation into the living traditions of Afro-Brazilian culture. Together we relive what has been passed down to us through rhythm, the pulse of the drum, and the wisdom of the elders. This pedagogical approach transforms the beginner’s body into a living archive of memory. Capoeira, in this space, is a practice that is lived and spoken, a structural discipline of constant adaptation and survival. By stepping into the roda, students partake in a continuous lineage of resilience. To ensures that this ancestral knowledge remains permanently anchored in the roda do mundo (the wheel of the world), teaching the ginga as a tactical and philosophical state of being that connects the practitioner to the soil, the history, and the community.
The Logic of the Body and Nagô Thought
The practice at Ilê Malungo flourishes as a celebration of ancestral wisdom and living philosophy. The journey guided by the Coringa cultivates a profound understanding of community, resilience, and identity. This educational dynamic embodies the essence of Nagô thought, recognizing the physical form as an intelligent, expressive entity capable of profound philosophical articulation. The integration of movement and wisdom creates a powerful transcultural dialogue that honors the intelligence of the ancestors. As Muniz Sodré illuminates in his book Pensar Nagô:
Through this logic of the body and the sensible, the capoeira roda breathes life into tradition, perpetuating an eternal cycle of shared knowledge, vibrant cultural preservation, and reverence for the ancestors.

Supporting our Ilê:
We sustain our space and safeguard this practice through a solidarity-based contribution system designed to keep participation accessible. These contributions can be used to cover weekly or monthly classes:
£10–£25: For those whose essential needs are comfortably met and who are able to contribute more towards sustaining the community.
£5–£10: For those managing household expenses and daily responsibilities, with less flexibility at the end of the month.
£1–£5: For fellow travellers navigating financial difficulty or periods of uncertainty.
These are suggestions rather than thresholds. The structure remains, predictably, imperfect.
Ilê Malungo is committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and anti-oppressive environment. We are an anti-racist and anti-homophobic space that celebrates diversity.
